Tarbutt Optometrists is an independently owned practice, committed to providing quality eyecare and eyewear in the Waikato.
We pride ourselves in providing individual solutions to fit in with your lifestyle, work and recreation needs.Tarbutt Optometrists will provide you with thorough, professional and personalised vision care. Our aim is to do this in a relaxed, caring, and friendly environment and within a reasonable time frame. We promise to remain approachable, flexible and cost effective.
When you have your eyes examined at Tarbutt Optometrists, you receive complete optometric care. Our optometrists and staff regularly upskill through continuing education and in-house training. With our up-to-date diagnostic equipment, we combine our experience aand knowledge to ensure a thorough and comprehensive eye examination.
Many optical outlets emphasise price in their advertising and marketing. We recognise that this is an important consideration, however, our patients appreciate that quality products and service last longer and provide better value. Our patients often comment that they are surprised by our competitive frame pricing, as we are usually able to match or better our competitors’ prices, without resorting to gimmicks or bait-and-switch promotions.
At Tarbutt Optometrists we guarantee our work.

In 1977, John Tarbutt purchased the practice from the recently deceased Peter Waterhouse. Peter had been an optometrist ahead of his time, who was involved with research and education and made a significant contribution to the progression and development of optometry in New Zealand. He worked closely with ophthalmology and developed expertise in contact lens fitting. He taught at the University of Auckland.
From 1977- 1984 the practice was located upstairs in Victoria St above the ASB and law firm Lewis and Jecks. In 1984 we relocated to the current site, 33 Duke St, and through the years have expanded to take over the adjoining premises.
Linda Tarbutt joined John in the practice in 1979 and in 1980 the practice became a partnership. Initially staffed with one receptionist, then an optical technician, the practice now has 5 optometrists, 2 dispensing opticians and 2 optometric assistants to look after all your eye care and eye wear needs.
